New polling commissioned by Make Votes Matter for the Labour for a New Democracy campaign found that 83% of Labour members want the party to back Proportional Representation.
This polling is especially significant since support for PR has grown by 7% since the question was last asked by YouGov, for Make Votes Matter, in December 2019. This is a testament to the hard work of activists making the case for PR within the Labour Party.
Make Votes Matter is supporting the Labour for a New Democracy (L4ND) coalition. L4ND was launched in October 2020 by Labour supporters of Proportional Representation including the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform, Open Labour, Politics for the Many and others.
L4ND has gone from strength to strength since October, with well over a third of Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) having passed motions in favour of PR and new allies joining the push including Momentum and ASLEF, the train drivers’ union.
Now, the key campaign target is encouraging as many CLPs as possible to send pro-PR motions to party conference. Without CLPs ‘prioritising’ the motion for conference, it will not be possible to change party policy, even with a large majority of members in favour. Every motion counts!
