Today, Thursday 5th December, is Democracy Day! More than 20 campaigns have joined forces in an unprecedented effort to call out the ‘radio silence’ on reforming the voting system. Rarely have so many organisations come together at election time to shine the spotlight on such a crucial issue.

This network of democracy organisations is calling for parties, activists, and the media to use Thursday 5th December as a key date in the electoral calendar to discuss the ‘elephant in the polling booth’ – the need to reform how politics works in Britain.

Women’s votes still don’t count enough

Kathrine Santos is a long-time campaigner for Proportional Representation (PR). She’s an active member of the Make Votes Matter East London group, and regularly takes part in street stalls and other awareness-raising activities to shine a light on why we need PR.

When she spotted gender equality and women’s rights group the Fawcett Society were planning an annual conference called Courage Calls, she leapt at the chance to represent Make Votes Matter at the event.

The conference was held on a cold winter’s day at the end of November, but Kathrine found it to be a heart-warming experience. She tells us how the day went and what she got out of.

'I have only voted in one general election where my vote actually mattered,' says MVM's Caroline Osborne

'I have only voted in one general election where my vote actually mattered,' says MVM's Caroline Osborne

From training to be a primary school teacher to having joined Make Votes Matter as a campaigner for fair votes, Caroline Osborne says she now feels like she has landed the perfect job.

The letter, signed by Labour parliamentary candidates, peers, celebrities and more than 9,000 activists calls on the party to commit to electoral reform. The team then headed to Downing Street to hand in a separate letter calling on the Conservatives to support Proportional Representation.

Caroline shares her story on what it’s like working at Make Votes Matter.

NEW REPORT - Peterloo 200: The path to Proportional Representation

Peterloo 200: The path to Proportional Representation draws on evidence from academics to make the case that the democratic inequality caused by First Past the Post has created in the UK one of the most unequal societies anywhere in the developed world. It is increasingly clear that Proportional Representation is not only more democratic, but it is essential for creating an equal society that can rise to the challenges of the 21st century.

Commemorate the Peterloo Massacre - and be the first to receive our latest report

This year marks the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre: a crucial event in Britain’s difficult path to democracy that is often woefully under-acknowledged.
